Family Breakfast

Every morning for the last five years I’ve toasted two slices of bread for breakfast.
I toast it dark brown, slightly burnt, and super crispy. A pat of butter, a squeeze of honey, and I’m good to go.
Until yesterday.
I put in the slices and pushed down the lever.
It popped back up.
I pushed it down.
Up.
Down.
Up.
Down.
What the heck?
The toaster whirred, a sound I had never heard before.
My phone chimed.
A notification appeared.

A new text message.
Good morning, Brandy.
Please stop burning my children.
