Love’s Longing Heart

He watched a video of Gino Vannelli in concert singing “Living Inside Myself,” a long-forgotten song of years past. He liked the song back then, but today it resonated even more. Emotions rose from deep within as Gino sang the evocative lyrics and mournful melody. Emotions stuffed away and not felt since that fateful day. 

“In my life, I felt so self-assured

But suddenly, it all changed

And now I can’t go on”

He recalled that day it all changed. That day the molehill of an argument turned into a mountain of anger. That day she walked out the door. 

“But oh how the seasons change

And now I’m not so strong”

He was as strong-willed and stubborn as she was, with neither willing to back down or say, “I’m sorry.” Such foolish, stubborn pride. He felt so sure that he was right and she was wrong. So sure she would see the error of her way. That she would come back as she had before. But she never did.

“I am lost

Living inside myself

Living without your love”

Haunting words of longing for love lost but not forgotten–revealing a gaping hole in his heart that never healed. He recalled her gentle touch, infectious laughter, and sweet kisses. Her love, so kind and unreserved. His eyes welled with tears; they fell in a stream of sadness and regret. 

“I was young, and time was on my side

Like a fool, I let it slip away

And now those days are gone”

But are those days really gone? Forever? Could there ever be another chance for love? He wiped his eyes and took a deep breath. He knew what he must do.

He looked up her number and punched it into his phone’s keypad, his hands trembling.

“Hello?” His heart fluttered at the sound of her voice.

“Hi Mary, how are you?”

He heard a gasp, then silence. After an eternity of seconds, she spoke, her voice soft and warm.

“Hello my love. I’ve been waiting for your call. What took you so long?”
