Another Path

  • Mystery & Suspense, Psychological

The waitress tops off my coffee cup; the cup across from me is full.

I’m happy. Today is the day. The first time I will see her, in person, face to face. No profile photo or video call could do a person justice.

She once told me that she stops here every Wednesday evening after work. I doubt she even remembers telling me. She will be surprised.

After searching a long time on that dating site, I finally found her. Made a connection. Nothing could be more clear.

She was it. The one. My soulmate. Forever.

The more we chatted and talked on the phone, the more I knew, and I know she felt the same way about me.

But after our video call a few nights ago, we hadn’t connected since. She stopped responding to my messages. Didn’t answer the phone. It almost felt like she’d ghosted me, but I know she would never do that. She must be really busy at work.

The door jangles, and there she is, as beautiful as I knew she would be. Stunning, in fact, with her long dark hair draped over her shoulders, her short navy dress, and high heels. Hanging on the arm of some guy who looks like he jumped off the cover of Esquire.

No, no, that’s not right. Who is he? Doesn’t look like her dad or brother. If he’s just a friend, she’s being a little too friendly. Can’t be a date. Wait, a date?

Is that what she meant by taking another path? I thought it was about her job.

I guess I’ll take another path too.

She’s made a mistake. She belongs with me. I just need to convince her.

She didn’t even notice me when she walked through the door, and she’s so caught up with Mr. Model Man that I doubt she will.

I’ll stay low and watch. Drink more coffee. Order a burger and fries. Take my time as always.

And when they leave, I’ll follow. Talk to her. Make her understand. If he gets in the way, I’ll deal with him. And take her home with me.
