My Responsibility Now

I walk through the door to my new workplace near the city center, buzzing with subdued energy I can almost feel. There are many people here, hundreds, maybe thousands, I’m unsure. From my vantage point, I can’t see them in their spaces—separate and contained—but I sense muted voices, hushed whispers, and quiet conversations all around.
I know nothing of their stories, lives, families, and friends. I’m unaware of their plans and dreams, failures and triumphs, joys, laughter, sorrows, and tears.
But I know they are my responsibility now. Because starting today, I am the new caretaker of Resting Peace Cemetery.
