I\u2019m startled awake by the sound of a blaring trumpet. What was that? The moonlight streaming through my bedroom window tells me it\u2019s still night, but my wife’s side of the bed is empty. Where did she go? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My breath catches, my hands shake, and terror races through my veins. The thing I have feared the most my entire life has finally happened. She\u2019s gone like a thief in the night, and I\u2019ve been left behind. I missed the Rapture! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oh God, please no!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I pray and ask for forgiveness for every sin I have ever committed, and I beg for another chance. It\u2019s my worst nightmare come true. I\u2019ve seen the movies and read the books, and I know what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I hear a rustle of sheets, and my heart sinks with the mattress. They\u2019ve come for me! My wife snuggles up behind me and gently strokes my hair. I exhale my bated breath and try to hide my panic. \u201cW\u2026where did you go?\u201d I stammer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe car horn got stuck, and I went out to fix it,\u201d she whispers. \u201cYou were snoring so loud you didn\u2019t hear it, and I didn\u2019t want to wake you up. Go back to sleep, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There\u2019s no way I can go back to sleep now; I\u2019m wide awake. I roll over and face her dim shape in the dark. \u201cOh, I heard it all right; it woke me up and scared me half to death. You\u2019re gonna think I\u2019m crazy or paranoid or whatever, but I gotta tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTell me what?\u201d She snickers. \u201cI already know you\u2019re a little crazy, but shoot.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat horn, I thought it was the last trumpet, and I missed the Rapture. I thought I was left behind \u2014 that you left me behind \u2014 and I was so terrified I almost had a heart attack.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAwww, baby, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d She kisses my cheek, soft and tender. \u201cYou know I love you forever, and I will never leave you behind.\u201d She nibbles on my ear. \u201cHow about I give you a rapture you won\u2019t miss, or ever forget?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI would like that,\u201d I whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
