It’s the latest technology: convenient, safe, and unhackable, they said.
I got one embedded in my hand, between my thumb and index finger. A microchip smaller than a grain of rice, replacing ID cards, credit cards, keys, transit passes, and my entire digital life.
It was so small I forgot it was there. A wave of my hand unlocked doors, bought groceries, and paid my bus fare. Convenient, safe, and unhackable, they said. No one could ever steal my identity.
But that’s not true. Because I’m staring at the bloody stump where my hand used to be. I’ve been hacked.
